Author instructions

Papers and reviews checked by language editors should be sent to the editors of Peregrinus Cracoviensis.

GENERAL COMMENTS

Papers should be written using proper English. The spelling of words should either follow the Oxford English Dictionary  or the PWN-Oxford English-Polish Dictionary. It is recommended that each paper be reviewed by a native speaker before it is submitted for publication. The editors may conduct this type of review for a fee, with the author's prior agreement. In such cases, papers edited by native speakers are sent to their authors for final approval.

Papers written in the Polish language should be checked by a Polish language editor.

REVIEWS OF PAPERS

Once the secretary receives a first draft, it is sent to two reviewers. Both reviews are anonymous. We make every effort to make this process as brief as possible. Once the reviews are in, the editors make a decision and inform the author of their decision.

MAIN BODY OF PAPER

The main body of the paper should adhere to the following rules:
  • language – English or Polish
  • length of paper – 6,000 to 9,000 characters (up to 20 numbered pages with footnotes, references, tables, figures and photographs)
  • word processor – MS Word (*.DOC, *.DOCX, *.RTF)
  • format – A4
  • font - Times New Roman CE 12 points
  • spacing – 1.5 lines
  • margins – 2.5 cm

Do not insert any figures or tables into the MS Word files you are submitting following the review process and the language editing process. Instead, mark the location of each figure or table in the main body of the paper by inserting a short description of each figure or table. Please note the following example: Figure 3, Table 2, Photograph 4.

  • All tables should be saved in one file (Kowalski_Tables)
  • Every figure or photograph with the author's name and a number in its file name should be saved in a separate file (e.g. Kowalski_fig_02, Kowalski_photo_03)
  • Descriptions of figures (Kowalski_fig_descriptions) and photographs (Kowalski_photo_descriptions) should be saved in a separate file

The main body of the paper should not contain any information that would make it possible to identify the author.

The text should consist of the following sections:

    • Author(s)
    • Title of paper
    • Summary: 150 – 300 words
    • Keywords: up to six
  1. Main Body

Three levels of subchapters are permitted, designated using Arabic numerals:

    1. Level One
    1.1. Level Two
    1.1.1. Level Three

Figures, tables and photographs are to be numbered consecutively using Arabic numerals and designations such as Table 1, Figure 1 and Photo 1.

  • Do not use the TAB key to indicate the beginning of a new paragraph. Create indentations using the following method: Format/ Paragraph/ Special/ First line every 1.25 cm.
  • When using the %, o, ;, :„..." symbols, do not leave a space between the number (or text) and the symbol. The correct usage is the following: 50%.
  • When using a number range or a temporal range, use a hyphen without spaces, e.g. 1997–1999, 10–15.
  • When inserting additional information into a sentence, use a hyphen with spaces, e.g. "The paper also uses – for comparative purposes – suspended material concentrations…"

Using mathematical units

  • SI units
  • Commonly used units: km, m, cm, dm, mm, µm, kg, g, mg, µg, km2, m2, s, 24h, dm3.
  • Units involving negative powers, e.g.: km•s-1, dm3•s-1•km2.

  • vertical dimensions – width must be exactly 125 mm, maximum height 17 cm. With smaller figures, tables and photographs, width may not exceed 65 mm.
  • horizontal dimensions – width must be exactly 185 mm, maximum height 11 cm.

If a larger figure or table needs to be published, please contact the secretary.

Use only one type of font for figures and tables (preferred: Arial Narrow):

  • Tables must be created in MS Word.
  • Tables must be created using the "Insert Table" function – without changing the height of rows, without centering the table, without the use of internal "spaces" and "enter" keys and without any special symbols.
  • Headers should have a uniform style – all starting with a capital letter or small letter.
  • In the English language, decimal points are denoted with a period (e.g. 10.89).
  • The title, descriptions and sources should be listed in a separate index of tables.

Figures to be printed need to be saved as JPG files with a resolution of 300 dpi or more.

  • Cartographic symbols should be numbered and their descriptions should be placed under the title of the figure.
  • Figures created in Excel should be submitted as xls files or – if possible – create a CorelDraw file (version 9).
  • Figures created in Excel should not be moved to CorelDraw using the "cut and paste" function. Instead, the following procedure should be followed: Edit (from the main menu) >>> special insert >>> picture (metafile) or picture (extended metafile); at this stage, use the Ungroup option (CTRL G), set figure size, and follow accepted procedures.
  • Each figure should be saved in a separate file using an appropriate number scheme: (e.g.. Kowalski_Ryc1.cdr, Kowalski_Ryc1.jpg).

Procedure for creating drawings using CorelDraw:

  • Use the CMYK color scale for contours and backgrounds.
  • Minimum thickness of lines used in figures: 0.1 mm. Use a broken line to show secondary lines in figures.
  • Use borders 0.15 mm thick along with the "no scaling" option.
  • When using a color scale or shades of grey, please use the following shade values:
    • 2 tints: 30%, 50%
    • 3 tints: 10%, 30%, 50%
    • 4 tints: 10%, 30%, 50%, 80%
    • 5 tints: 10%, 25%, 50%, 75%, 100%
  • Each map (cartogram, diagram) must have a linear scale.
  • The creation of folded maps should be consulted with the secretary.
  • Please indicate which figures are to be in color and which are to be black-and-white. Please also indicate which figures are to be placed within the body of the text and which figures are to serve as inserts or folded maps.

Photographs to be printed need to be saved as TIF or JPG files with a resolution of 300 dpi.

Digital photographs need to be submitted as separate files.

Scans:

  • color photographs (CMYK color scheme) and black-and-white photographs (shades of grey) of standard size (15 x 10 cm) – minimum 300 dpi;
  • slides and small-format film negatives – 1200 dpi, if they are to be much larger when printed. When using a 15 x 10 cm slide (negative), a resolution of 400-600 dpi is sufficient;
  • scanned materials should be in TIF format with the "no compression" option checked

Please indicate which materials are to be in color and which are to be black and white. Please also indicate which materials are to be inserted into the body of the text and which materials are to serve as inserts.
